Cosmetics I tab settings

This topic shows the settings for the Cosmetics I tab groups in the Specify Chart Settings dialog box. ChartSetProperty and ChartGetProperty attribute names are also listed for each group.

Padding & Margins group

This table lists the settings you can make in the Padding & Margin group box of the Cosmetics I tab.

Padding and margin settings are specified using pixels.

Cosmetics I tab Field / Option Attribute Name Description / Comments
X-Axis Name Padding XAxisNamePadding Specify the distance between the top of the X-Axis title and the bottom of data labels (or canvas, if data labels are not displayed).
Y-Axis Name Padding YAxisNamePadding Specify the distance between the Y-Axis name and values.
Y-Axis Values Padding YAxisValuesPadding Specify the padding between the left side of the chart canvas and the Y-Axis values.
Label Padding LabelPadding Specify the vertical space between the bottom of the canvas and the data labels.
Value Padding ValuePadding Specify the space between the columns or anchors and the value text boxes.
Legend Padding LegendPadding Specify the space between the edge of the legend and the the edge of the chart canvas.
Plot Space Percent PlotSpacePercent On a bar or column chart, define the spacing between bars or columns, from 0 to 80. By default, the spacing is set to 20% of canvas width. For example, if you want bars flush against each other, set this value to 0. If you want thin bars with a lot of space between, set this value to 80.

ChartBottomMargin

Chart margins are the padding between the chart border and the canvas. Each of the margins - left, right, top, and bottom - must be set individually.

CanvasTopMargin

CanvasBottomMargin

Canvas margins are the padding between the edge of the chart canvas and the chart itself. Each of the margins - left, right, top, and bottom - must be set individually.

For 2D charts, the canvas is the visible rectangular box. For 3D charts, the canvas is the imaginary box around the 3D canvas.

By default, the system calculates the margin space based on the elements placed on the chart. Use this attribute to override the default space with a higher value. You cannot specify a lower value. This attribute is helpful if you have multiple charts on a page and you want all of the canvases to align with each other.

Canvas Padding CanvasPadding Specify the space between the canvas border and the first and last data points in the chart. .

Background/Border Cosmetics group

This table lists the settings you can make in the Background/Border Cosmetics group box of the Cosmetics I tab.

Cosmetics I tab Field / Option Attribute Name Description / Comments
Back Color BgColor Specify the RGB value for the background color of the chart component, as a hexadecimal value (000000-FFFFFF).

You can double-click to display the Color dialog box, where you can select a color or define a custom color for the chart component background. The hexadecimal code displays after you click OK to exit the Color dialog box.

To use a gradient background fill, specify multiple hexadecimal values, separated by commas.

Back Alpha BgAlpha For each color you specified above, specify the transparency of the background, from 0 (transparent) to 100 (opaque). If you are using multiple values (for a gradient fill), separate the alpha values by commas.
Back Ratio BgRatio Specify the ratio of each color in the gradient on a scale of 100. The total of the ratios must equal 100. For example, to plot an equidistant gradient for two colors, specify the ratio as 0,100.
Back Angle BgAngle Specify the angle of the gradient fill, in degrees, from 0 to 360.
Show Border ShowBorder When selected, this option displays an outer border around the whole chart component, containing the canvas and the legend as well.

Otherwise, no chart component border displays.

Border Color BorderColor Specify the RGB value for the color of the chart component border, as a hexadecimal value (000000-FFFFFF).

You can double-click to display the Color dialog box, where you can select a color or define a custom color for the chart component border. The hexadecimal code displays after you click OK to exit the Color dialog box.

Border Thickness BorderThickness Specify the thickness, in pixels, of the chart component border.
Border Alpha BorderAlpha Specify the transparency of the chart component border, from 0 (transparent) to 100 (opaque).
Show V-Line Label Border ShowVLineLabelBorder When selected, this option displays a border for the V-Line label. The V-Line is a vertical separator line - or horizontal in the case of bar charts - used to separate blocks of data.

These values are only applicable if you have selected the Dashed option.

Data Plot Cosmetics group

The term "data plot" refers to:

  • The columns in a column chart
  • The lines in a line chart
  • Pie or doughnut slices in pie or doughnut charts
  • And so on

This table lists the settings you can make in the Data Plot Cosmetics group box of the Cosmetics I tab.

Cosmetics I tab Column / Option Attribute name Description / Comments
Use Round Edges UseRoundEdges When selected, this option plots chart objects with rounded edges and fills them with a glass effect gradient. When this option is selected, plot fill settings are ignored.
Show Plot Border ShowPlotBorder When selected, this option displays borders around data plot objects.
Plot Border Color PlotBorderColor Specify the RGB value for the plot border color, as a hexadecimal value (000000-FFFFFF).

Plot Border Dash Length

Plot Border Dash Gap

PlotBorderDashLen

PlotBorderDashGap

If the Plot Border Dashed option is selected, use these settings to control the length of the dashes and the gaps between them.
Plot Fill Angle PlotFillAngle If you have made specifications to use a gradient fill on plot objects, specify the fill angle for the gradient in degrees (0 to 360).
Plot Fill Ratio PlotFillRatio If you have made specifications to use a gradient fill on plot objects, specify the ratio of each color in the gradient on a scale of 100. The total of the ratios must equal 100. For example, to plot an equidistant gradient for two colors, specify the ratio as 0,100.
Plot Fill Alpha PlotFillAlpha If you have made specifications to use a gradient fill on plot objects, specify the transparency to use for the fills, from 0 (transparent) to 100 (opaque).
Plot Gradient Color PlotGradientColor You can assign a secondary color to globally add a gradient to the entire data plot of the chart. (The primary colors are assigned in the Palette Colors field of the General tab.)

For example, if you specified individual colors for columns, to create a gradient that ends in white, specify FFFFFF here, and the chart renders plots will white gradients on all primary colors.

Specify the RGB value for the plot gradient color, as a hexadecimal value (000000-FFFFFF).

You can double-click to display the Color dialog box, where you can select a color or define a custom color for the plot gradient. The hexadecimal code displays after you click OK to exit the Color dialog box.

Overlap Columns OverlapColumns When selected, this option allows columns to overlap to provide a richer 3D look. This setting applies only to 3D column and bar charts.

When this option is cleared, columns/bars do not overlap.

Note: If there are enough columns/bars on the chart, columns/bars overlap automatically, even if this setting is cleared.
